Back to School with Canadian Turkey #TurkeyMakesItEasy #Giveaway

Disclosure: This post/giveaway has been sponsored by Canadian Turkey

My daughter goes back to school next week. Next week! I know we all the say the same thing “Summer went so fast”, but it did, didn’t it? Summer in our house is mostly business as usual as I work outside the home full time. That means my daughter was in day camps for most of the last two months. Which also meant I did not get much of a break from packing lunches. It made me miss her younger daycare days when someone else took care of lunch! We both got a break from lunch box lunches this past week when I took some time off so we could both have a bit of a break from work and camps and just everything before we dive head first into the new school year. Because come next week everything starts again! School, dance, music, swimming and I’m pretty sure I’m missing something here.

It’s going to get very hectic, very soon. But you know all about that I bet. Most parents I know are on a tight schedule come September. It can be a lot to balance. Between work, school, homework, sports and other activities it can be a challenge to fit in things like family time and eating right. But we all know how important it is to keep our kids, and ourselves, fueled with healthy, nutritious meals and snacks. This is the perfect time to think turkey! Canadian Turkey is healthy, delicious, versatile and affordable. Full of protein, turkey really can be the anchor to any meal or snack. I have to admit I am not great at meal planning. I’m more of a come home and see what I can find in the freezer kind of mom. I generally have a reasonable supply of fresh produce in the fridge, it’s the figuring out what to do with them at the last minute that I struggle with. So, for me, keeping my freezer stocked with items (especially proteins) that I can turn into a meal is vital. And one of our favorites to have on hand is meatballs.  There are just so many things you can do with them! You can serve them with pasta, throw them in some soup, in a sandwich or, one of my daughter’s favorite things is when I serve them with cocktail forks along side a tasty sauce!

This recipe for Easy Turkey Meatballs Starters is the perfect staple to have on hand. They freeze really well so go ahead and make up a big batch!

Easy Turkey Meatball Meal Starter Recipe

Prep Time 20 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes
Author Canadian Turkey

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground turkey
  • 1/2 cup onion, minced
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 3 eggs beaten
  • 1/2 cup grated Romano cheese
  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh herbs
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  1. Pre-heat oven to 350°F (180°C).

  2. Sauté onions until softened and translucent, 5 minutes.

  3. Add garlic and cook an additional 2 minutes. Remove mixture from heat and cool.

  4. Combine all ingredients in a bowl; ground turkey, onion-garlic mixture, panko breadcrumbs, eggs, cheese and herbs. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Do not over mix.

  5. Use a small ice cream scoop to portion out meatballs. Roll portions between moistened hands to create a round even shape.

  6. Heat olive oil in a non-stick frying pan. Sear meatballs evenly, turning occasionally, until lightly browned on all sides, 4-5 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and transfer to a non-stick baking sheet.

  7. Bake at 350°F (180°C) for 12-15 minutes until cooked through and no longer pink in the centre.

  8. Serve the meatballs warm. Alternatively, you can freeze the meatballs on a clean baking sheet overnight and then divide into a few batches and store in the freezer in freezer-safe bags or airtight containers. Make sure to label bags or containers with a date. Meatballs can be stored in the freezer for up to 2 months.

Recipe Notes

TIP: These meatballs make a great snack or lunchtime meal.  Make them a lunchbox staple and serve with salad, rice or pasta. Use a favourite dipping sauce on the side: hummus, tzatziki, tomato or cheese sauces all work well.

It doesn’t get much easier than that. One simple meal starter with so many options! Another one of my daughter’s favorite way to eat these is with a sweet and sour sauce over rice. That is just such a classic and tastes like childhood to me!
