A Different Kind Of Online Safety with @ReactMobile - Outside The Box

A Different Kind Of Online Safety with @ReactMobile

A Different Kind Of Online Safety with @ReactMobile

There is a lot of talk these days about online safety.  And rightly so.  The internet has made our world very small and being safe and smart online has become very important. But have you ever thought about how online tools can help keep you safe in the “real” world?

React Mobile Smart Phone App

When I was going to college I worked several nights a week in the recording studio at the school.  On the evenings I worked it was close to midnight before I headed for home.  In those days I didn’t have a car and walked pretty much everywhere.  Luckily I only lived a few blocks from school at the time so it wasn’t a long walk.  But it was a dark walk and there was rarely anybody else around in the neighbourhood at that time of night.  I didn’t even have a cell phone in those days – cell phones at the time were monstrous devices that the odd person carried in their vehicle. Yes I’m dating myself a bit here.  So, I walked, alone, in the dark, with no easy means of getting help if I needed it. Most nights the thought of being in any danger never crossed my mind.  But every once in a while it was easy to let my imagination get the better of me.  You know those night when you are alone and every creak, scrape or gust of wind just must be a serial killer? There really weren’t many options at the time to give me any added protection of peace of mind.  But things are different now. Now I carry a smart phone and  911 is at the touch of my fingers.  But sometimes you don’t need 911.  Sometimes you just need that little bit of security that someone is looking out for you (but can still get emergency help if necessary).  That’s where React Mobile comes in.

React Mobile helps you turn your smartphone into a powerful lifeline. The app has a “Follow Me” feature, that let’s your self selected contacts track your whereabouts in real-time whenever you’re concerned for your safety.

Once you activate the “Follow Me” feature your contact(s) will received a text and/or email with a link that takes them to a live map of your location.  Setting up contacts is easy.  You can either get the info right from your contact list on your smart phone or enter them manually if the contact isn’t already in your phone.

You can set the Follow Me feature to be active for whatever length of time you like and if you arrive at your destination or just feel you don’t need to be “followed” any longer you simply click on “I’m Safe”.  Your contacts will no long be able to track your location and will receive a message letting them know you are safe and no longer in need of assistance.

And what if you find yourself in a situation where you need help RIGHT NOW?  You can always call 911 right? But it would also be great if you could let the people you care about know you’re in trouble too.  With React Mobile you can do both of those things easily and quickly.

In an emergency, press the SOS shield on the app to send out a panic alert containing a link to your GPS location to select emergency contacts via text message and email, which can optionally be posted to Facebook and Twitter. Once the SOS alert is activated, you’re automatically prompted to dial 911.

React Mobile

React Mobile is perfect for:

  • Real estate agents or anyone in an industry that meets with unknown clients away from an office
  • Runners who like to run alone, especially in the early morning or in the evening
  • College students walking the campus late at night
  • Parents who are concerned about the whereabouts and safety of their children
  • Anyone that just wants a little added peace of mind

My Thoughts on React Mobile

I’ve had the app installed for a few weeks now on my iPhone.  Although I haven’t found myself in a situation, thankfully, where I need it I have played around with it so if a times comes where I do need it I feel comfortable and ready to do so.  So far I’m pretty impressed with the app. When I send alerts out to my contacts they received them almost instantly and have had no trouble tracking my whereabouts through the GPS.  I added contacts both manually and via my contact list on my phone and both methods were easy and quick.

My family likes to travel and although we generally stick together when we are away it’s easy to get separated.  And even if you aren’t in any danger I like the fact that if I’m lost I can just send my husband an alert and he can see exactly where I am.  Truth is I get lost pretty easily!

React Mobile is a free app which is awesome but I can honestly say that I would pay a reasonable amount to download it.  So far it’s worked flawlessly and I know there are going to be times where I am pretty glad I have it installed.

  1. I can see how this app could be a lifesaver. I've been playing around with it myself and find it really easy to use. Give the fact that it's also FREE, it's a no-brainer to me. Thanks for sharing. Besos Sarah at Journeys of The Zoo

  2. Middle child phones me in the middle of the night when she is walking home by herself. Last night it was 2 am when she called, I chat with her until she is home safe in her apartment.
