Outfit the Whole Family for Halloween with Costume Discounters

When you live with a three year old, any day can be dress up day.  We have a “tickle trunk” full (literally full) of costumes and dress up accessories. It’s a great way to encourage imagination and role playing. Most of the costumes in the trunk are ones that I pick up the day after Halloween at deeply discounted prices. Since I’m picking them up pretty cheap and the selection is limited, the little one doesn’t have much say in what I buy.  So, when Halloween rolls around, that is her opportunity to actually pick what she would like to wear trick or treating.

There is a little dilemma when costume shopping with a three year old. We can go to the some of the big box or department stores but the selection is typically limited and the prices are a little over the top.  Now, at this time of year we have Halloween pop up stores all over the place.  The selection is generally pretty good.  The prices not so much.  AND, here’s the real hold back for us, they are full of big scary displays. Yes, my three year old is a bit of a scaredy cat. She doesn’t like life sized cackling witches and zombies telling her how they want to eat her brains.

So, when I was given the opportunity to review a costume from Costume Discounters I was pretty pleased.  Costume Discounters has literally thousands of costumes (for both kids and adults, oh and pets) to pick from AND at really reasonable prices. When I sat my daughter down with me at the computer to pick a costume she was thrilled!  Seriously thrilled.  There are just so many costumes to pick from. I thought it would take us an hour or so to narrow it down to one costume.  I mean there are Disney Princesses, Strawberry Shortcake, Dora, My Little Pony and much, much more.  But there was a costume that immediately caught her eye and she knew that is was “the one”.

Pretty cute eh? I think it was the wig that really sealed the deal for her.  I mean pink hair – how can you go wrong?

Now the fun part of ordering online – sizing!  The site has a sizing chart to give you a rough idea. And, since we’ve bought plenty of costumes in the past I felt pretty confident in what size to buy.  We ended up buying a size medium which, according to the chart, should fit a child aged 5-7.  Yes my daughter is three.  But I know that costumes tend to fit small (and they caution you about that in the sizing chart) and because it tends to be pretty chilly here at Halloween I also wanted a little extra room for her to wear a long sleeve shirt and some leggings underneath.

The day the costume arrived Molly immediately had to try it on.  Of course. This particular costume came with the dress, the adorable pink wig and shoe covers.

Ok how cute is that? The costume is exactly how it’s pictured on the site and on the package.  There were no surprises. The boot covers are a little big for my three year old but I expected that and it’s not an actual problem.  In this picture she’s not actually wearing any shoes under them.  For Halloween she will be wearing boots under the boot covers and they will work just fine. There is plenty of room in the dress, which again I expected since I ordered big. And this is actually perfect because there is room for some warmer clothes underneath and this dress will be able to stay in the tickle trunk for dress up time for quite a while. And, the most important thing, she LOVES it.

So we have a happy mommy and a happy kid with a costume that cost less than $30! I’m pretty pleased. I also spent some time browsing the clearance section at Costume Discounters (because that’s how I roll) and I will probably end up ordering a few additional costumes to restock the tickle trunk as she grows out of some of her current ones. And since my husband and I also like to dress up with Molly to go trick or treating I’ll most likely order us up some as well (the adult selection is just as great as the kids).

So here are my overall thoughts on our experience with Costume Discounters:

  • The selection of costumes and accessories is great.
  • The prices are very reasonable and even with shipping this costume costs less to order than I have seen it anywhere in a store.
  • Delivery time was great.
  • Sizing is a bit of a gamble but if you’ve bought costumes before you will have a reasonable idea.
  • The costume was accurately represented  on the site as well as on the packaging.

Costume Discounters currently ships to Canada, the US, Australia, France, the UK and New Zealand.

  1. That wig is the cutest and the boot covers are the best. I think they look even cuter because they're so big! Based on her face, that sure is one happy kid. All she needs is the candies…
