What’s important to you? If you are reading this blog, chances are family is going to be at the top of that list. Your kids, your spouse, your parents… What about community? Chances are you are involved in your community on some level. Maybe your kids are enrolled in the local soccer club. Maybe you have a plot in a community garden. If you grew up in a rural setting like I did, community events were a big deal.
Being involved with your community can be very rewarding. It gives you the chance to meet people with similar interests and gives you a sense of connection. Within every community there are always people in need of support. Whether it’s a need for kids lunch programs, shelters for the homeless or resources for a local animal rescue organization – chances are there is at least one cause in your community that could use support. That is what Aviva Community Fund is all about.
“We’re making a difference by helping passionate people like you make positive changes in their community.”
What is the Aviva Community Fund?
It is an annual competition, with funding and support from Aviva Insurance. The goal of the competition is to foster positive change in local communities. In total $1,000,000 will be distributed to support community projects across Canada.
How can you get involved?
There are a couple of ways that you can participate in the Aviva Community Fund Competition.
Submit an Idea
The goal here isn’t to just pick a cause you would like to give money to but to submit an “action oriented” idea (with a budget of $150,000 or less) that can be implemented by December 2013. The idea must support a community in Canada. For more information on how to submit an idea please visit the Aviva Community Fund website. There you will find lots of helpful tips on how to create a winning idea!
Vote for Ideas
Whether you submit an idea or not be sure to visit the site and browse through all of the other ideas that others have come up with to support their communities. Pick your favorite (or favorites) and be sure to vote for the ones that mean something to you! There are three rounds of voting and you can vote up to 15 times in each round. Voting starts October 1st.
How are winning ideas selected?
There are three rounds of qualifying. The top 90 ideas from the first round (determined by your votes) move on to round two. The 30 top vote getters from round two move on to the finals. The 30 ideas that make it in to the finals are then scored by judges against specific criteria. All finalists will receive at least $5,000 in support of their idea. The community fund is then distributed to an idea from each of the size categories (small, medium and large). $150,000 of the fund will be reserved to support the “At Risk Youth” prize and another $150,000 for the “Broker Supported ” prize. Once all of the winners in these categories have been funded they will continue to give money to other finalists (based on rank and score) until the entire fund of $1,000,000 has been allocated.
Supporting community causes is something that is very important to me. One cause that is near and dear to my heart is promoting awareness and providing support and opportunities to those effected with mental illness. What cause is important to you?
I’ve had some time to read through some of the ideas that have already been submitted and I have to tell you it’s going to be tough to narrow down who to vote for when the time comes. There are so many wonderful ideas and causes to support.
The clock is ticking! Voting opens on October 1st but you have until November 26th to submit your idea. So get thinking about ideas to create positive change in your community and/or read through the creative and inspiring activities others have submitted and cast your votes!
