Grilling season. We made it folks. The birds are chirping and the neighbourhood smells delicious. I’m a year-round griller (even in the great frozen north), but let me tell you, there’s something so delicious about standing in front of a grill barefoot and with a cold drink of your choosing. For a long time I was stuck on the standards: steak, chicken pieces, ribs, or burgers, but lately my sense of adventure (and let’s be real, budget) have taken me on a journey to discover what else I can put on the grill. It wasn’t until very recently that I took my Thanksgiving and Christmas turkeys outside and introduced them to the marvelous world of outdoor cooking and let me tell you, I can’t go back. It mostly started because I found I had just as many summer gatherings to cook for as cold-weather, gravy-and-potatoes-kind of meals and you really can’t get the bang for your buck with any other protein as you can with turkey. Plus, turkey is so amazingly versatile. You can do it simple with a smoked whole set-it-and-forget-it bird, or it’s such an easy substitute for just about any of your favourite recipes, like these Canadian Turkey, Bacon and Pineapple Skewers.
If that didn’t make you drool, go take a gander at canadianturkey.ca for tons of other recipes. If you’re like me, it can be a bit overwhelming to jump in all at once, but you just might need the Canadian Turkey BBQ Bootcamp eGuide! Their recipes and tips will give you everything you need to take your turkey outside this summer.
Turkey plays well with just about any flavours you can throw at it, you can be as simple as you want with a few fresh herbs, and it will stand up to the boldest rubs and marinades just as well. Add some smoke and heat and you’re only limited by your imagination.
My personal favourite thing to do with turkey is buy the fresh ones when they’re on sale around the holidays and cut them into pieces to use all year long, but if you just want to dip your toe into the turkey pool, the options available at your local grocery store (don’t forget to ask your butcher for 100% Canadian raised!) are pretty amazing. You can get just about any cut, from ground meat to legs, breast steaks, wings and sausages.
My family has fallen in love with turkey because of the amazing flavours, and I have fallen in love because it’s such an inexpensive AND healthy meal to serve to my family. All turkey cuts (dark and white meat) are lean, and a great source of healthy protein without compromising on taste, tenderness or juiciness. Also, a good grilled or smoked turkey breast makes for some killer sandwiches, salads, and high-protein snacks for lunches all week long. Make a little extra and nail that meal prep in one good meal!
