So far we are having an amazing summer here in Canada. The weather, at least here in Saskatchewan, has been awesome and even the mosquitoes have been unusually non existent. Although my husband and I both work fulltime we are getting out, with our daughter, as much as we can and soaking up the summer because we all know it won’t last forever and before you know it we will be knee deep in six months of winter!
We are so fortunate to live in this big beautiful country. There are so many amazing places to explore. Whether you have a week or just a day or two to hit the road, it’s easy to find a destination worth the drive. Here are a few trips to put on your list:
Tofino, British Columbia. Looking for something truly picturesque? Head to Canada’s surf capital – Tofino. Get your family on a ferry from Vancouver to Nanaimo and drive along the Pacific Rim Highway for a truly breathtaking view of mountains and lakes, along with rainforest. The area is also known for its trees, which grow in spectacular sizes. Some trees are believed to be 1000 years old.
Banff, National Park, Alberta. If you hear the mountains calling then Banff may be the place for you. Hiking, fishing, cycling – it’s an active families dream. providing spectacular views along the way.Walk on the Columbia Icefields, take a helicopter or boat tour, or conquer a summit on a guided hike. Or stop by the quaint town of Banff and take in some shopping and delicious food.
Anywhere in Northern Saskatchewan. When people think about Saskatchewan (my home) they often think of the flat, barren prairies or fields of wheat. And yes we do have those. But if you venture just a few short hours north of the major cities (Regina and Saskatoon) you will find yourself smack in the middle of the boreal forest. Think tall pines, a vast selection of birds and other other wildlife and some of the best fishing you’ll ever encounter.
Winnipeg, Manitoba. Did you know that Winnipeg is Canada’s 7th largest city? Even though Manitoba is not a small province, over 50% of the province’s population live right in Winnipeg. It’s a sprawling city with a million things to do. Their are some awesome family attractions like Tinker Town and the Children’s Museum and important cultural spots like the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. There’s also fantastic shopping and amazing food!
Haliburton, Ontario. Truly the quintessential summer escape from the big city, you’ll practically feel the stress lifting as you start driving into cottage country. There are several scenic route options, dotted with great ice cream parlours along the way, which all lead to good times ahead. Whether you stay for the day or rent a cottage, you’ll want to make sure you stop at Webers in Orillia, a Canadian burger landmark since 1963.
Quebec City, Quebec. Whatever direction you’re coming in from, stop in a few francophone villages on your way into the old city to soak up the culture, food and French! Making your way through the beautiful and lush countryside, you’ll be thrilled to arrive at your final destination: old Quebec City, a city full of history, architecture, cobble stone streets and endless charm.
Before you head out on a great adventure, make sure you’re well prepared, especially when kids are involved – we’re hoping for less “are we there yet?” and more “wow, this is amazing!” You’ll always want to pack things like a GPS system, snacks, sunscreen, and sun protection, first aid supplies and good music!
