It’s winter. In Saskatchewan. You know that that means right? Cold, cloudy and plenty of white stuff. To be fair, we’ve had a surprisingly mild winter over all so far. I think this past weekend was the first time the windchill dipped below -40 so that’s pretty good. But even the mildest winter brings dull grey skies and that ho hum wintery feeling. I don’t hate winter. We love skating and sledding and making snowmen. But I think that lack of sunshine can get to the best of us. And, of course, it’s also cold and flu season. Again, so far we’ve been lucky there. Other than coming down with brief, not so terrible colds, we’ve managed to say pretty bug free so far this winter. But it’s only mid January. We have another solid two months of winter left here. And with a little one that spends half her day with one set of kids and then another, not to mention all the sneezing, sniffling people at work, well we are constantly bombarded with germs.
We’ve got our flu shots. We do sensible things like wash our hands and (mostly) get enough sleep. This winter thing isn’t new to us. But what is somewhat new to us is having a little one with an underlying health condition that can make catching even the smallest bug a pretty big deal. So we do pretty much everything we can, within reason, to keep bugs out of our home and our body’s ready to fight any that sneak in.
The other problem that comes with winter in Canada, besides colds and flus, is that lack of sunshine that I mentioned earlier and as we all know getting enough sun (you don’t need tons of sun but you need some) is very important to avoid vitamin D deficiencies. Vitamin D is essential for good bone and teeth health and it helps support an overall strong immune system.
We always have some Vitamin D supplements around in the winter. The little one gets the Orange Natural D3 Drops and the grown ups get the softgels. The drops have a light orange flavour that are perfect for kids and the softgels for grownups are easy to swallow which is perfect for someone like my husband who has a hard time with big hard to swallow pills.
Another new favorite in our home is MagPop, one of the newest products from Orange Naturals. It’s full of Magnesium Glycinate, Vitamin C (perfect for cold and flu season) and Electrolytes to help you maintain a healthy metabolism. It also helps with the development and maintenance of bones and teeth and maintaining proper muscle function. MagPop is an effervescent powder that you just dissolve in a cup of water for a fun, fizzy and tasty drink even the kids will love.
