The same thing happens to me every year around this time. The holiday rush is over, the decorations get put away, gifts find a new home and my house is restored to its pre-holiday state. Everything gets a good cleaning (not in the closets though, don’t be crazy) the fridge and pantry get restocked and I can take a deep breath and enjoy a nice quiet meal with my family. When dinner is over, I’ll just put the dishes into the dishwasher (because I don’t hand-wash… that’s why I bought a dishwasher) and get back to doing all of those New Year things on my list.
That’s when it happens.
I open the dishwasher and make some kind of strangled-cat sound, because despite all of my efforts to get back to a state of clean this is one place that just doesn’t measure up.
You see, I have well water, and no matter what I do my beautiful stainless-steel dishwasher collects a beautiful white scum that is freakishly hard to wash away. Yes, I could probably get on my knees and scrub scrub scrub, but ain’t nobody got time for that. Instead I quickly drizzle some dirty plate juice on the inside of the door and pretend the mess wasn’t there all along.
I doubt it works.
Anyway, now that you all know my dirty little secret, I’ve decided that this year is going to be different. I bought a bottle of Finish® Dishwasher Cleaner. I had no problem finding it on the shelves at any of the major grocery chains I frequent, so I tossed one in the cart. I didn’t have high hopes (remember the well-water-dishwasher -scum?) but I read that Finish® Dishwasher Cleaner has a powerful formula with 5x Power Actions that help maintain your machine, remove limescale, clear grease, and freshen your dishwasher. Finish® Dishwasher Cleaner also cleans all the parts inside your dishwasher that you can’t otherwise clean (filters, spray-arms and pipes). They get that scum build-up too, and cleaning them regularly will keep your dishwasher in good working order.
I figured it was worth a shot. Bonus, it’s basically idiot-proof. You peel off a sticker, put it upside-down inside an empty dishwasher and run your longest/hottest wash. After that, all that’s left for you to do is binge-watch some Netflix and have a glass of wine. I think the hardest part, in my house at least, was having an empty dishwasher (just ignore the pile of dishes in the sink for a little bit).
Sounds wonderful, but does it work?
Well… it wasn’t perfect, but to be fair this was a big challenge with the well water and the fact that I’ve never really cleaned my dishwasher. There was still some of the well water residue on the door, but the improvement was very evident (as you can clearly tell from the photos). The fresh smell was lovely (they have lemon too) which is good, since I was starting to get that weird old-food smell in there. I’m sure if I followed their recommended guidelines and cleaned my dishwasher monthly, I would get less build-up to start off with and therefore end up with a regularly clean dishwasher. So I can tell you that the Finish® Dishwasher Cleaner will be going on my shopping list in the future. You can pick up Finish® Dishwasher Cleaner for $4.99 at Loblaws, Walmart, RCSS, Canadian Tire, No Frills, Sobeys, Metro, Food Basics and Fresh Co.
Maybe I should host an after holiday party. I’ll just leave the dishwasher open all night so my guests can see it. Or at least, I won’t be embarrassed to open it up at all. Now if only I could afford a maid to come in and help with the post holiday clean up! Wouldn’t that be amazing?
