Check out The Healthy Shopper Fall 2014 Picks and Win (CAN 12/15)

Although technically it’s not winter just yet it sure does feel that way. Some places (like Buffalo) have been blasted with a cruel dose of winter already. And the malls and TV commercials have been pushing holiday shopping on us for weeks already. This time of year can be a lot of fun but, unfortunately, it’s also cold and flu season. Although it’s all but impossible to avoid these bugs completely, there are certainly things we can do to minimize our risks of getting sick and help our bodies fight off those bugs more efficiently. Simple things like washing our hands and surfaces like door knobs, making sure we are well rested, and eating foods that keep us healthy.

We try to eat healthy in our house and, overall, I think we do a pretty good job of it.  But there is always room for improvement. I am definitely a label reader and although I don’t exclusively buy organic products you will find quite a few in our home and there are some items that I will go out of my way to buy organic – like broccoli. My little one loves broccoli but she will eat organic broccoli like it’s candy.  I also find that there are so many new healthy products coming out all the time that it’s really hard to stay on top of it all and sort out that’s good and what’s not so good.

Unfortunately healthier products are often more pricey as well. When you consider that quality products are made with quality (which equals more expensive) ingredients its no surprise that we often pay more. If you’re on a budget, which most of us are, that can make it a little tougher to buy the best products.

The Healthy Shopper

If you are looking for some guidance to sort out which healthy products out there are worth buying then you might want to check out The Healthy Shopper.  If you are looking to save some money on those healthy products then you definitely need to check out The Healthy Shopper. It is an excellent resource if you are looking to eat healthy and not break the bank.  They have developed a coupon book for natural and organic products that is distributed in hundreds of healthy food stores across Canada (the book can also be ordered online for the small cost of shipping).  To find out where to pick up your free coupon book of healthy savings just visit the “find the book” section of the site. You can also get a preview of what’s inside.

Picks for Fall 2014

I recently got to try out the Healthy Shopper’s picks for fall 2014 and I’m thrilled to be able to share the picks with you (and give you a chance to win them too).

Olympic Yogurt

I’ve been a big fan of Olympic Dairy for years. Their organic sour cream is the best sour cream I have ever had. It is so rich and creamy. Olympic has also added a new product to their yogurt selection – CHIA prebiotic – probiotic yogurt. It’s made with 100% natural ingredients including chia seeds. It also contains one billion live probiotic cultures and 2 g prebiotic inulin per serving. Olympic Dairy is also 100% Canadian owned and operated.

Made Good GranolaMade Good Granola

One of the hardest parts of healthy eating can be healthy snacking. And the best way to ensure you reach for healthy snacks it to make sure you have some good options on hand. Made Good has some really good, and tasty choices for you. Made Good is a family business and they are passionate about providing healthy snacks that are rich in nutrients and minimally processed.  Their products contain wholesome and ethically sourced whole grains and organic ingredients. And all of the Made Good granola bars and minis are peanut free.

The Made Good granola bars come in four varieties – mixed berry, chocolate chip, chocolate banana and apple cinnamon. Not only do they contain the nutrients in one full serving of vegetables from six different sources, they’re also made from whole grains and are non–GMO verified. I also love that they are low in sugar containing only 6 or 7 grams per bar. They aren’t a huge bar but I was impressed how filling and satisfying they are.

The Made Good Granola Minis are like a tiny one bite granola bar. In fact one serving (26 grams) of granola minis have the same nutritional value as the granola bars. The granola minis come in apple cinnamon, chocolate banana and strawberry flavours.

gluten free cookie mix

I don’t buy a lot of gluten free products because we don’t have any gluten issues in our family. But there are times when I’m having guests over or maybe making a treat to take to a party or even where I do want a good gluten free option. This is certainly an area that has improved over the past few years with more (and better tasting) options available. But Pamela’s Products has been making gluten free product for 26 years! They have a pretty impressive line up of products including Artisan Flour Blend. This flour blend has no dairy, nuts, salt, leavening, corn or soy. It will work perfectly in most of your traditional recipes or with subtle tweaking such as adding more liquid.  I was really excited to try the Sugar Cookie Mix. My little one LOVES making and decorating sugar cookies. These cookies mix up, roll out and bake like you would expect from a sugar cookie. On their own you can tell them apart from other sugar cookies but throw a little icing and some sprinkles on them (yes I have a four year old) and there’s not much difference. The great thing about this mix as well as you can think outside the box a little and change it up. Turn them into chocolate chip cookies or use as a shortbread like for squares. There are a lot of great options.
Simply Natural Pasta Sauce OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We love pasta in our house. Well to be honest by husband and I are more likely to eat spaghetti squash than spaghetti but a great squash deserves a great sauce. Simply Natural pasta sauces (as well as their condiments) are certified organic, are fat free and don’t contain high fructose corn syrup. We got hooked on Simply Natural BBQ Sauce this past spring so we knew we would love these sauces too.

allimax

When I first saw the box of Allimax I have to admit I had no idea what it was. It had words like Allisure and allicin that I was not the least bit familiar with. But once I started reading the pamphlet that came along it quickly started to make sense. I’m sure you’ve been told at least once in your life to eat garlic or garlic supplements when you feel a cold coming on. That’s not entirely an old wives tale. There is a compound created when garlic is crushed – allicin – that has some pretty remarkable health benefits including virus fighting properties. I won’t get too much into the science of why Allmix is different than your ordinary garlic supplements (you can find all that info on their website) but it is a better way of getting allicin. I’ve just started using it so we will see if it makes a difference this cold and flu season.

hylands

If you are a parent you are probably familiar with Hyland’s. Hyland’s actually makes products for the while family but, being a mom, I always think of their products for babies and young kids. When our wee ones are sick with colds and coughs there just really aren’t any OTC options for them other than medication for pain and fever. Cough syrups and cold medications are a huge no no when it comes to young kids. But there are some other options including homeopathic remedies. Hyland’s Baby Tiny Cold Tablets and Cough Syrup are two products that can help relieve your baby’s cold symptoms. Both products contain no artificial flavours or dyes and are safe for babies that are 6 months or older.
