My four year old starts her first dance class next week. I can’t believe we are here already! She’s already done a couple of gymnastics classes and swimming lessons but for some reason dance class just seems different. I was trying to pinpoint what it was that made it feel different. Is is the costumes? Is it the more competitive nature? I’m not sure. But the one thing I can say with certainty – this is the most expensive activity we have enrolled in so far. We haven’t even started yet and already I’ve paid more for dance than I have for all of her past activities combined.
We consider ourselves fortunate. We can manage to put together the extra money and cover the expense to enroll our daughter in at least one physical activity at a time. Not every family is that lucky. The fact is one in three Canadian families cannot afford to put their kids in organized sports and physical activities. Take a moment to think about that. One in three – that’s a pretty large number. Maybe that’s your child’s best friend. Maybe it’s your neighbour. Or maybe it’s you.
I probably don’t need to lecture you on the importance of sports and physical activities for kids. There are just so many benefits and most of them are obvious. Being active is just plain healthy – it is important for both physical and mental health. It helps kids boost confidence and teaches them leadership skills. Kids who play sports are more likely to achieve academic success and less likely to get involved with drugs. The list goes on and on.
Canadian Tire Jumpstart
The Canadian Tire Jumpstart program is here to help. Jumpstart is a nationally registered charity dedicated to removing financial barriers so kids across the country can get off of the sidelines and into the game. Jumpstart assists with costs like registration, equipment and transportation as well as lending support to unique initiatives to increase access to sport and activity programming. The impact this program has had on thousand of kids across Canada is amazing.
How can you get involved?
There are lots of ways to get involved with Jumpstart:
- You can easily donate online
- You can find a Jumpstart event to participate in
- You can purchase Jumpstart products (a donation is made with each purchase)
One of the major events put on each year to support Jumpstart is Pedal for Kids. Participants have the option in taking part in a 5 day ride from Ottawa to Quebec or a 1 day ride fro Ottawa to Hawkesbury or Trois-Rivières to Quebec City. The five day trip which includes a guided tour, food, accommodations and cycling apparel costs $2,200. The one day trips include a guided tour, food and cycling jersey and costs $500. Riders can also fundraise for the cause and if they raise enough can have the cost of the ride covered.
Pedal for Kids is a huge fundraiser for the Jumpstart program . Just to give you an example – in my province, Saskatchewan, Pedal for kids has contributed $1.7 million and helped 14,700 kids get into the game! 100% of the donations made to Pedal for Kids goes directly to the Jumpstart program to help kids. If you want to find out more or register for the ride you can visit the Pedal for Kids website. You can also donate to an individual or team enrolled in the ride.
