Well that was quite a summer. If you are a regular reader you will know that we had a pretty stressful time when our daughter was ill and spent some time in the hospital this summer. It was very hard on her. And it was very hard on us. Between being in and out of doctor’s offices and hospitals and still trying to run a home and keep working – well to say we got run down is putting it mildly. All of that stress and lack of sleep is hard on a body. Very hard. So, when we finally managed to get our little one on the road to recovery it was also time to starting thinking about our own health again.
That might sound easy but it’s not. After months of focusing on everyone and everything else it can be hard to get back to focusing on yourself. Sometimes you need a little help. Just our luck – I had the opportunity to be part of the Orange Natural Ambassador program. And the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. The ND Shakes were actually the perfect thing to help get us back on track.
The ND Shakes come in different formulas to meet the needs of everybody. They have shakes for men, women, children and teens. Each line comes in chocolate and vanilla and contain all the things you want and doesn’t contain some of the things you may not want:
- Gluten free
- Soy and nut free
- Dark leafy greens
- Custom crafted multivitamin blends
- Therapeutic nutrients for various health concerns
- Developed by licensed Canadian naturopathic doctors
I have to tell you that I have a lot of great things to say about naturopathic doctors. After hitting a lot of brick walls trying to find a diagnosis for our daughter it was finally a naturopathic doctor that was able to help and get her on the way to recovery. So, when I realized that Orange Naturals were developed by naturopathic doctors was I completely on board and eager to try them. And just in case you missed it – the kids shake have the PTPA seal of approval which was also a big plus!
I also have to tell you that I am not normally a “shake” kind of person. Of course my shake experience goes back to the early days of gritty, chalk like whey protein concoctions. So, yeah, that kind of turned me off of the whole healthy shake lifestyle. But I was willing to give these a try. I knew I needed something to get me going back down the healthy path before I became completely run down.
The ND Shakes couldn’t be easier to make. Just put two scoops into into a cup of your favorite beverage – water, milk, milk substitute, etc. and shake well. If you love smoothies just blend with your favorite fruit. So, how does it taste. Pretty yummy actually. And the texture, which for me is just as important as taste, is great too. It’s quite smooth and doesn’t have that gritty feel that I remember from shakes of the “old days”.
I’m a label reader and I like what I saw when I read the labels on the ND Shakes. For example, the women’s shake (the powder before you mix it with your favorite beverage) has only 130 calories and 3 grams of sugar. And for a protein junky like myself I’m pretty happy with the 18 grams of protein. There are tons of other good things in there and they are all laid out and listed on the back of the package so you can see exactly what sort of nutrients you are getting.
Between two work outside the home parents and getting a little one ready to get off to daycare mornings can be pretty crazy around here. So I typically have my breakfast in the form of a protein bar at my desk once I get to work. It was an easy adjustment to switch up my bar for a shake each morning. I was worried at first that I wouldn’t find the shakes as satisfying as my protein bars but that actually hasn’t been an issue at all. Because it’s so protein rich, and I normally mix it with milk which adds even more protein, I find it generally keeps me going all morning. Because it’s low in sugar and contains cinnamon, which is great for helping to maintain healthy blood sugar levels, I don’t get that mid morning crash you sometimes find with other breakfast supplements.
My husband is also on board and really liking the ND Shake for men as well. He finds its a great post workout boost. We both agree that the addition of the shakes has really helped us in our goal to get back to taking care of ourselves. We both have our energy back and don’t feel like we want to crawl into bed as soon as we get home at the end of the day (well at least not to go to sleep).
And now that our daughter is on the mend I’m excited to try a few Orange Natural products with her too. Molly has always been an anxious child. We now know that part of that was a symptom of something bigger and she’s doing so much better now but we also have come to accept that part of that is just her nature. So, we do our best to help her through that and we are always open to new tools that can help.
I’m excited to get started using the Calm for Kids tincture and the Worry + Fear for Kids homeopathic remedy. We have relied on other natural remedies, with great success, for her health so I’m really looking forward to seeing what these Orange Natural products will do for us too. I will post an update soon to let you know how that goes!
