How Would You #FinishYourKitchen? Dream Big & Win

My Little Kitchen

Our house was built in 1946.  It’s a lovely 1 3/4 house with tons of character.  And it was built like a box.  Several years ago we undertook a major renovation on the main floor.  We took out walls, put in beams and carried out tons and tons of plaster.  It was a huge job but it was worth all of the effort. We made the boxy three room floor into one big bright space. In the process we were also able to expand our little kitchen by a few feet.  As luck would have it I am married to a very talented custom cabinet builder.  He was able to design and build a kitchen that could finally be the inviting open space that we wanted.  Now I have to admit that the space isn’t 100% complete.  We made excellent progress until we were blessed with our daughter, then everything came to a grinding halt.  But, the majority of it is done and I do have a lovely functional kitchen.

our kitchen

Like most families, we consider the kitchen the center of our home.  It’s just where we tend to gravitate. Ask any real estate agent what the biggest selling feature of a home is and most of them will tell you it’s the kitchen! It is the heart of the home.  It’s where we cook, where we teach our children to cook, often where we eat and where we just naturally gather.

How I Would Finish My Kitchen

There isn’t much more we can do with our kitchen given the space we have. There are a few things that need to be completed – like the cabinet doors need to be finished (they are currently just in primer) and there is some trim work to be completed.  I love my glass tile back splash and my bottom corner cupboards that pull completely out for easy access.  I would, however, LOVE new appliances.  In all honesty my appliances work just fine.  Although I wasn’t sure about that for a while.  I was pretty sure that our dishwasher was on its last legs a while back we decided to experiment a bit with dishwasher detergent and once we did we realized it wasn’t the dishwasher that was the problem.  We had been using the good old fashion powder detergent.  I had no idea that these new “fancy” tablets and packets were a million times better at cleaning!  The first time we used one of the new Finish tablets the very first thing we noticed is that the inside of our dishwasher looked like new!  Ten years worth of hard water and rust build up pretty much just vanished.  And the dishes – perfect.  I’m not exaggerating when I say that our cutlery had not shined like that since the day we got it. And my wine glasses sparkled.  This is important…

So, I guess I don’t really NEED a new dishwasher – or an oven or a fridge.  But I sure would love some new ones. I like to say it’s because the new appliances are more energy efficient – which is true.  But, the truth is, they would just be the final touch making my kitchen perfect.  All of our appliances are at least ten years old and are that first generation of stainless steel that shows every single hand print and is impossible to clean.  The finishes on appliances now are much better and easier to keep looking shiny and new.  I also love to cook and bake and have been pining over a double gas oven for quite some time.

  1. My dream kitchen would involve an extra 8", a window and tons of lights. I'd take yours as a close second 🙂 Love your bar chairs. I hope I didn't just insult them. Besos, Sarah at Journeys of The Zoo

I'm happy with the size of my kitchen, but I really need new cabinets, granite countertops, and slate floors. We spend so much time in there it would be nice to have a beautiful space I could entertain in.

  5. I adore your kitchen. It's really bright and airy and contemporary. My hubs is a custom cabinet maker who could never ever ever get the time to make our kitchen lovely. Odd. Anyways we finally had our kitchen fixed up by someone just in time to put our house up for sale. 🙂
