Shreddies No Bake Peanut Butter Treats {Recipe} - Outside The Box

Shreddies No Bake Peanut Butter Treats {Recipe}

Shreddies No Bake Peanut Butter Treats {Recipe}

My daughter loves “treats”.  She has a sweet tooth and could eat things like Oreos by the bag full if I let her.  Of course I don’t but I also don’t think it’s unreasonable to let her have a sweet snack here and there.  She eats a pretty healthy diet overall so I know she’s getting what she needs.  The problem that I have with many of the store bought treats she likes is that I can’t even pronounce half of the ingredients in them and I’m not all that thrilled with some of the ones I can pronounce.  I use to be pretty good at cooking homemade treats but lately I just don’t seem to have the time to do a lot of baking.

Last weekend I had a bit of timeon my hands to devote to cooking so I went to the pantry to see what I had.  I had recently bought a large box of Shreddies and so I went in search of a recipe that might incorporate them.  When I found a recipe for a no bake peanut butter treat I knew I had a winner.  These are so quick and easy to put together and I had everything in my pantry to make them.   I haven’t tried to freeze them but I don’t see any reason they wouldn’t freeze well.

  •  2 cups of Shreddies
  • 1/2 cup of peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup of butter or margarine
  • 1 cup of icing sugar
  • 125 grams of semi sweet chocolate (this equals 4 squares but if you are going to melt the chocolate in the microwave chocolate chips melt quicker and easier)

Line a 9×9 pan with foil, cut your foil longer than the pan so you have some overhang on the ends, and spray with cooking spray (or grease with butter or margarine).
Set aside 36 whole Shreddies.  Put the rest in a Ziploc bag and crush into crumbs (I used a rolling pin).

Put the peanut butter and margarine in a microwave bowl and microwave for 30-45 seconds until the butter has melted.  Mix until smooth and add the Shreddies crumbs and the icing sugar.  Stir until well combined.  Spread into the bottom of your 9×9 pan and press firmly to make a crust.

Move the crust to the fridge to set.  Put the chocolate into a small microwaveable bowl and microwave for 1 minute.  Give it a stir and return to microwave for another minute.  Remove from microwave and stir until the chocolate is melted and smooth.  If there are too many chunks microwave again in 30 second intervals.

Remove the crust from the fridge and spread the melted chocolate on top. While the chocolate is still soft arrange the Shreddies you set aside evenly into rows.

Return the pan to the fridge to let the chocolate set (approximately 20 minutes).  Once the chocolate has set remove from fridge and, grabbing the overhanging foil, remove the entire cake from the pan and move to a cutting board.  Cut into squares (one Shreddie per square). Enjoy!

  1. I had no idea, until you made me look, that they don't sell Shreddies in the US. Yes, it is a breakfast cereal. I think Crispix or maybe even Life cereal would work…
